Cuernavaca

Cuernavaca, know as the City of Eternal Spring, is located in the heart of Mexico only 40 miles from Mexico City. Cuernavaca is a large city with almost a million inhabitants, yet maintains a small town feel: no large sky scrapers, and few buildings taller than three stories. While the proximity to Mexico City provides such advantages as: accessibility to the international airport and cultural events, Cuernavaca offers a safe environment with no pollution, less traffic, and one of the best climates in the world.

Historically, Cuernavaca has been a resort town. Moctezuma, the great Aztec leader, named the city Cuauhnahuac, a place in the woods, but the Spaniards who could not pronounce the indigenous name, re-coined the Spring City, Cuernavaca, literally translated: horn of a cow. Hernan Cortez, the Spanish colonizer, built a summer palace in Cuernavaca, which today is a national monument and a city Museum.Emperor Maximilian, modern Mexican presidents, and many other well-to-do Mexicans and foreigners alike have chosen Cuernavaca as their vacation home.

Today’s Cuernavaca is no longer only a resort town. Cuernavaca is a thriving truly Mexican, cosmopolitan metropolis, with a strong tourist industry, commerce, great schools, and diverse culture. The city is home to more than forty Spanish Language schools. It also has the largest number per capita of researchers and academics, as it is the home of more than 20 of Mexico’s best research institutes. Majestic views of the volcanos and tranquil lifestyle have attracted a large artistic community to town. The state of Morelos is also a national leader in alternative health. Those who seek a healthy lifestyle and alternative treatments, can find, in Cuernavaca anything from Acupuncture, Homeopathy, Bach Flowers, Natural Hot Springs, Spa’s, Meditation, Yoga, Thai Chi and much more. Foreigners have flocked to the city from all over the world, both to retire, or to take part in the many opportunities Mexico offers. Cuernavaca’s international residents are an adventuresome group, enjoying the unique blend of age old traditions and modern Cuernavacan lifestyle.

Cuernavaca’s residents enjoy the exceptional climate, with an average daily temperature of 20° Celsius (71° Fahrenheit) year round, and several microclimates. A typical Cuernavaca style home is all open to the elements, with outdoor terraces functioning as hallways, requiring no air-conditioning or heating. The many golf resorts, tennis clubs, and other outdoor sports are available all year.
